Strength & Conditioning in Dance
Topics that relate to a dancer’s needs in the areas of athletic performance, recovery and adaptation will be discussed.
These include basic assessment strategies for identifying muscle imbalances (tightness and weakness) and training strategies for correcting them, improving strength, endurance, general preparedness and how to properly recover for optimal adaptation.
As there is a lot of misinformation surrounding the use of strength training for dancers and in younger populations, a focus on how to safely implement strength training, injury prevention and rehabilitation will be covered.
This workshop is designed to educate dance teachers and dancers about safe and effective stretching using principles from Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST). Carolyn will lead participants through a series of self stretches and partner stretches that target specific areas where dancers typically experience tightness and restrictions. Participants will learn about the anatomy of each stretch and how it is functional for dance technique. The stretches presented in this workshop are pain free and can be customized for people with injuries and other limitations. This will be a hands-on workshop, where participants can experience both stretching others and being stretched. The goal of this workshop is to give teachers new practical tools for increasing dancers’ flexibility and for helping dancers recover from and prevent injuries.
Carolyn Schmidt is a dancer, choreographer and teacher as well as a Certified Fascial Stretch Therapist. Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a form of assisted stretching that targets not only the muscles, but the fascia. Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones and joints. FST targets the entire joint capsule, using traction to remove restrictions from movement and to stimulate lubrication. FST is perfect for recovering from injuries, preventing injuries, increasing range of motion and creating a lengthened and free feeling inside the whole body. Carolyn is certified in FST from the Stretch To Win Institute in Tempe, Arizona. She is trained by the creators and founders of the method, Ann and Chris Frederick. (www.stretchtowin.com)
What to wear/bring: Wear comfortable clothing. Bring layers as body temperatures can fluctuate during stretching. Bring a notebook and pen. Teachers may bring a student to stretch if they don’t feel comfortable stretching other teachers or want to work on a student’s specific issues.
